Melbourne Museum - ‘Load of Old Rubbish’

In term two, Year 7 students visited the Melbourne Museum as part of the History curriculum for Humanities. The primary reason for the visit was to take part in the ‘Load of Old Rubbish’ activity which focussed on an archaeological dig that took place in the Little Lonsdale district of Melbourne in the 1980s. Students learnt about how archaeologists search for artefacts, analyse artefacts as well as conserve artefacts. In addition, they were given the opportunity to analyse real artefacts discovered during the dig as assess what the objects may have been used for.

Following the activity, students visited The Melbourne Story exhibition and were able get a closer a look at the discoveries made during the dig as well as see examples of how Melbourne has changed over the years.
